Great Mac OSX Freeware – Office Suites – LibreOffice vs OpenOffice

Tech Tips 101 logo

There are differences between LibreOffice and OpenOffice? Apparently.

But the differences are so minor – both Office suites derive from OpenOffice.org  after all – that users will require all their powers of observation to determine where exactly those differences lie.

Which is why this post was written: to save users time better spent on other things. Tech Tips exists to serve.

The differences

The differences are *minor*, as stated above. Here are the more interesting ones:

  • Code Licensing: updates to OpenOffice source code are added automatically to LibreOffice, but not OpenOffice.
  • Languages: LibreOffice offers language support for more languages.
  • Embedded fonts: LibreOffice uses embedded fonts – meaning users can view your document with correct formatting without every font being locally installed.
